Why Soil Testing is Crucial Before Construction in MangaloreInsights from Civil Engineer & Builder: Mr. Mohith Shetty

Mangalore, known for its lush greenery and picturesque coastlines, also faces serious geographical challenges, especially during the monsoon. With heavy rainfall and frequent landslides affecting the region, ensuring a solid foundation for any new construction is not just recommended — it’s essential.

According to Mr. Mohith Shetty, a renowned name in Mangalore’s civil construction industry, “Soil testing is the first and most critical step before starting any home or high-rise building project. Without it, you’re building on guesswork.”

Understanding the Ground Beneath
Soil testing reveals vital data such as:

Soil bearing capacity (how much load the ground can safely take),

Water table levels,

Soil composition (clay, sand, silt, etc.),

and the risk of soil movement or erosion.

In regions like Ullal, Konaje, or the Western Ghats’ edge, soil may be loose, marshy, or unstable during rains. Mr. Shetty warns, “Neglecting this step can lead to foundation cracks, water seepage, or in worst cases — building collapse during landslides.”

Safety First – Especially During Monsoon
With over 3,500 mm of annual rainfall and an increasing number of rain-triggered disasters in Dakshina Kannada, incorporating soil test results into structural design is not just a professional requirement — it’s a life-saving measure.

Advice to Home Builders
“Whether you’re building a dream home or a commercial space,” Mr. Shetty advises, “never skip the soil test. It costs less than 1% of your project, but protects 100% of your investment.”
